Kayleigh Z-Martin (b.1992, Pasadena, CA) moves fluidly between mediums. In a cyclical exercise of intake and output, origins can be found in her walking practice, often with a camera in hand. Back in the studio, collected images and objects enter into a symbiosis of methods and materials, working in service of one another. From deep sleep to waking life, everything, natural and mechanical, physical and perceived, is filtered through our neurological and nervous systems – time as a steady stream is archived, morphing with loss and accumulation. As a system of methods, Z-M's practice offers examples of nexus points between the mind (ephemeral, weightless, cosmic) and the brain (physical, weighted, chemical). When considered as material units, tracings, image shards, ink pools, ceramic forms, and studio scraps replicate individual patterns and unruly rhythms of neurological activity and beats skipped by the heart.
